Can you crack the case? This month’s mini-challenge is connected to our very first full-sized genre-specific challenge. Meaning that this mini comes with a rule… Are you up for the extra challenge? It’s time for our March Mystery Mini!

I’m new here! What are mini-challenges?

Mini-challenges are smaller, month-long reading challenges, typically comprised of three prompts and built around a specific theme. Mini-challenges are released sporadically throughout the year, and not every month has one. Match one book to each of the prompts and have fun reading!

How does this March Mini-Challenge work?

This month, our Mini is connected to our newly released Mystery Genre Challenge. The Mystery Genre Challenge has fifty different prompts but unlike our regular challenges, it comes with a catch. This challenge has to be completed only using mysteries.

For this mini, we’re asking you to choose any three prompts from our full Mystery Genre Challenge. (Note: For this specific challenge, we’re referring to prompts as “cases,” but it means the same thing.) Choose three cases that appeal to you most, match a mystery to them, and start reading! You can find the full challenge and list of cases to choose from here.

  • Do I have to only read mysteries for this challenge? This is a genre-specific mini, meaning that we’re asking you to tackle three different prompts using only books from the mystery genre. There are many sub-genres of mysteries (historical mysteries, cozy mysteries, romantic suspense mysteries, mystery thrillers, sci-fi mysteries, fantasy mysteries, etc.) Any sub-genre of mystery works for this challenge. As long as the book contains a mystery, it will count towards this challenge!
  • I’m already participating in the full Mystery Genre Challenge. If I’m completing the mini, do I have to complete these prompts twice? It’s entirely up to you! If you’re participating in the full Mystery Genre Challenge, this mini is a great way to get started! Feel free to avoid doubling up and simply count the same books for both the mini and the full challenge (3 books total). However, if you’re looking for an extra challenge, you’re welcome to complete them twice (6 books total).
  • I really can’t stand the mystery genre. What do I do? No worries! Mini-challenges are always optional. Most of our minis can be completed using any genre, but occasionally they come with extra rules. Feel free to opt out this month if mysteries don’t work for you! Or, for our friends desperate for a non-mystery workaround, multiple prompts will fit other genres. While this is a mystery-specific mini, we understand that a few of our friends may take a different approach and use non-mystery books. (We won’t tell the challenge police, we promise!)
  • I’m ready to pick my three prompts! Where is the Mystery Genre Challenge? You can find the full Mystery Genre Challenge on our website, here.

Mini-challenge tips:

1) Do I have to complete this challenge in March?
No, feel free to complete this mini-challenge whenever you like. Some members prefer to focus on finishing the main 2026 challenge first, and then go back to complete all the minis afterward. Others enjoy the added challenge of completing mini-challenges in the month they’re released. Do whatever works for you!

2) Is this a part of the main 52 books in 52 weeks challenge?
Yes and no. Mini-challenges are related to our 52 books in 52 weeks challenge, but are also completely optional. Some members may decide to complete the full challenge and all the minis. Other members may choose to skip mini-challenges or to complete some of the minis but not all of them. Some challenge participants might only be joining in for the minis. It’s up to you how (or if) you’d like to participate.

3) Can I use the same books as my 52 book challenge?
It all depends on your personal reading goals! You can choose to read these books in addition to your regular 52 Book Club reads, or you can double up and combine them with prompts still left on your 2026 list. This challenge makes 58 prompts for the year so far. Your challenge, your rules!

What books will you be reading this month?

  1. Thank you! This is so great. I don’t even need to leave my house to find all of the books that I will need for this one. No outer space or dinasauors. Just my first love: MYSTERIES!
