What are mini-challenges?

Mini-challenges are smaller, month-long reading challenges, typically comprised of three prompts and built around a specific theme. The goal is simple: match one book to each of the prompts and have fun reading!

How does this October Mini-Challenge work?

This October, grab a pint and a book and settle in for three new Oktoberfest-themed reads! Match one book to each prompt for a total of three new reads this month. Books can be any genre and do not have to relate to Oktoberfest — but bonus points if they do!

Prompt Walkthrough:

Prompt 1: Set in Germany

This prompt is a simple setting-based prompt. Choose any book set in Germany. The book can be any genre and set during any time period: contemporary, historical, or even an alternate universe! It may be fully or only partially set within Germany.

Goodreads List: Set in Germany

Prompt 2: Title would make an excellent name for a craft beer

Craft beer is made by smaller, independent breweries which often use diverse ingredients for unique tastes. They also often have fun names! Beer names could be funny, punny, absurd, cool, or delicious-sounding. For this prompt, choose a book that could double as a name for a craft beer. This will be a highly subjective prompt.

Feel like getting creative? Use the template above and the book title of your choice to design your own beer can. Don’t forget to give us a slogan or describe the taste. (For example: “Old Man and the Sea” an Irish stout with briny hints.)

Goodreads List: Title would make an excellent name for a craft beer

Prompt 3: A thirsty read

Ready for a prompt with a few different interpretations? For our final prompt on this Oktoberfest challenge, we’re looking for a “thirsty” read. This could mean a few different things depending on your definition of thirsty. Here are a few examples of ways to interpret this prompt, but as always, feel free to get creative!

  • Traditional definition of thirsty: Choose a book with a drink on the cover or in the title
  • A book that makes you thirsty: Set in the desert
  • Thirsty = desperate / attention-seeking. Pick a book with a character who fits this description.
  • A romance novel.

Goodreads List: A thirsty read

Mini-challenge tips:

1) Do I have to complete this challenge in October?
No, feel free to complete this mini-challenge whenever you like. Some members prefer to focus on finishing the main 2026 challenge first, and then go back to complete all the minis afterward. Others enjoy the added challenge of completing mini-challenges in the month they’re released. Do whatever works for you!

2) Is this a part of the main 52 books in 52 weeks challenge?
Yes and no. Mini-challenges are related to our 52 books in 52 weeks challenge, but are also completely optional. Some members may decide to complete the full challenge and all the minis. Other members may choose to skip mini-challenges or to complete some of the minis but not all of them. Some challenge participants might only be joining in for the minis. It’s up to you how (or if) you’d like to participate.

3) Can I use the same books as my 52 book challenge?
It all depends on your personal reading goals! You can choose to read these books in addition to your regular 52 Book Club reads, or you can double up and combine them with prompts still left on your 2026 list. This challenge makes 70 prompts for the year so far. Your challenge, your rules!
